Check your tire pressure monthly. Tires can lose up to 1 psi per month. Use a tire pressure gauge and compare the reading to the optimal tire pressure listed in your manual or on your driver-side door sticker. Make sure not to under- or over-inflate your tires. Not having the right tire pressure can shorten the life of your tires, affect the handling and cause your vehicle to use more fuel than necessary.
Inspect your tires for wear. Regularly checking the wear pattern on your tires can help diagnose other wheel issues you may have. For example, uneven wear could mean that your wheels are not properly aligned, that there are other parts issues or that your tires are not properly inflated. Checking your tires regularly can also help you catch early tire damage – preventing a major accident, like a highway blowout, before it happens.
Give your tires the Quarter Test.Using a Canadian quarter, insert it head-first into a groove where the tread is the lowest. If the tread covers the top of the Queen’s head or lower, you should be OK. If it only covers from the top of the head to the edge of the quarter, you should have it replaced.
