All Weather Tires Ontario

All-Weather Tires in Ontario

All-weather tires are a popular choice for drivers in Ontario. This is because they combine the best of both worlds - the spring, summer, and fall capabilities of all-season tires (which should really be called three-season tires) and the winter traction of a winter or snow tire.

This hybrid tire can handle a wider range of conditions than your typical all-season tire. For example, where an all-season tire performs best in temperatures of 7 degrees Celsius and above, all-weather tires are suited to both warmer and freezing temperatures. They can perform well in mild conditions, as well as some non-extreme winter weather, such as light snow. Overall, all-weather tires, which is a term often used interchangeably with all-season tires, offer a similar level of performance when it comes to spring, summer, and fall driving, but are far more effective when driving in the winter. This makes them ideally suited to parts of Canada where cold weather abounds but extreme winter weather is less common, like Toronto. Plus, going with an all-weather tire has the added benefit of convenience. Unlike a winter tire, all-weather tires are true four-season tires, meaning you won’t need to change them out.

All-Weather Tire Manufacturers

Most of the major tire brands now manufacture all-weather tires, so it should be easy for Ontario drivers to find an all-weather tire for them. However, it’s worth noting that some manufacturers still refer to their all-weather tires as all-season tires. The key to choosing a true all-weather tire vs. a three-season “all-season” tire is finding a set of tires that is 3 Peak Mountain Snowflake certified. This designation confirms that the tire has successfully been tested in harsh winter weather. All-weather tires must have this designation, otherwise, they are probably all-season tires and won’t offer the same level of performance in winter. Some of our favourite all-weather tire models include the Michelin CrossClimate 2, the Firestone WeatherGrip, and the BFGoodrich Advantage T/A Sport LT. All three of these tires are 3 Peak Mountain Snowflake certified and provide four-season traction on a wide range of terrain.

What’s the difference between All-Weather and Winter Tires?

There are several key differences between all-weather and winter tires. Knowing these differences can help you decide which one is right for you. All-weather tires are essentially heavy-duty all-season tires that offer excellent performance in a wide range of temperatures and weather conditions. For example, all-weather tires offer exceptional stability on wet and dry asphalt, common during Ontario summers, as well as solid traction on ice, soft snow, and hard-packed snow. Winter tires, on the other hand, are far less versatile than all-weather tires as they are only suited to winter driving. That said, they are the best of the best in winter conditions. Winter tires handle the most extreme weather conditions (think wet ice and heavy snowfall) with ease. The varying performances these two types of tires offer comes down to their treads and rubber compounds. All-weather tires feature a mixture of blocky treads and siping and a flexible rubber compound that ensures they can grip snow and ice and won’t become too stiff in cold temperatures. Meanwhile, winter tires have the most aggressive tread design of any type of tire and even more siping than an all-weather tire, coupled with a soft tread compound so that it can stay flexible in sub-zero temperatures. As you can see, all-weather and winter tires do have some similarities. But at the end of the day, one offers four-season performance, so long as the winter isn’t extreme, while the other is specifically engineered to handle everything from long patches of ice to fresh snow.

Are All-Weather Tires Good for Winter in Ontario?

All-weather tires are an excellent choice for Ontario drivers. As a true four-season tire, they provide the traction, grip, and stability required to traverse everything from hot, dry asphalt to light snow. Thus, unlike all-season tires that become a liability in cold temperatures and snowy weather of any kind, all-weather tires have the necessary tread pattern and rubber compound to adapt to these conditions. This makes them an ideal choice for the average Ontario driver, who doesn’t experience much heavy snowfall or ice over the winter, or who mostly drives on ploughed roads, like those in the GTA. The only circumstance in which winter tires might be recommended is if you live in the northern part of the province and experience more extreme weather during the winter, or if you do significantly more driving, especially highway driving, than the average person. But in most cases, if you’re an Ontario driver who is looking for a quality set of year-round tires, you can’t go wrong with all-weather tires.

Beyond location, your driving habits also come into play. The amount you use your car may dictate the type of tires you get. For example, if you live somewhere with harsh winters but very rarely use your car, then perhaps you’ll decide that all-weather tires work for you. Alternatively, if you’re someone that drives frequently, or if you tend to spend a lot of time on the highway or in off-road conditions, then all-weather tires likely won’t provide the level of traction needed.
